The 17-Hydroxyprogesterone test measures the levels of a hormone called 17-hydroxyprogesterone in your blood. Produced by the adrenal glands, this hormone is a precursor in the synthesis of cortisol. The test is commonly used to diagnose congenital adrenal hyperplasia (CAH), a genetic condition that affects hormone production and can lead to an excess of 17-hydroxyprogesterone. Elevated levels can indicate CAH or other adrenal disorders, and further tests may be required to confirm a diagnosis and guide treatment.
